HARRISBURG, Pa. — In response to concerns about damaged nuclear plants in Japan, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett announced Monday that while low concentrations of radioactive iodine-131 have been detected in rainwater in Pennsylvania, tests performed on public drinking water supplies throughout the state have revealed no elevated levels of radioactivity, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

WaterTech e-News Daily™ reported on March 23 that elevated levels of iodine-131 from a distressed nuclear plant in Japan had been found at a water treatment plant near Tokyo.

Gov. Corbett’s announcement was made 10 miles from Three Mile Island on the 32nd anniversary of the worst nuclear accident in U.S. history, according to the story.

The governor emphasized that the radiation detected in rainwater was at very low concentrations, the article reported.

“The bottom line is the drinking water is safe,” said Corbett.
